Tim Henson / W6RST

I am completely dead! Two of my biggest projects to date! I accidentally stumbled upon Polyphia when I was looking for progressive jazz fusion. Tim's tattoos were so interesting that I wanted try drawing them (why??? Am I crazy???).

The digital piece had so many new elements for me to try - a full guitar, detailed clothes, entire upper body, and a tattoo overlay. It turned out pretty well!

I don't know what I was thinking and why attempting to draw his full back tattoos was a good idea, that's some serious art-ception to tackle! Miraculously, most of the designs are in roughly the right place, I'd say between 60 - 70% accuracy?

I'm all technical-ed out now and need to rot my brain with non drawing things!

Digital studies

Fruit plate - speed sketch with a one hour limit. Not bad, though I spent far too long on the plate (which is skewed too); I went over it 3 times which wasted a lot of time, leaving me less time to go into more fruit detail.

Busking - I messed up the cello so bad because I assumed instead of actually check the dimensions! But It was a fun study for a full body pose I've never done, plus an instrument. This was completed without a sketch outline first, in order to get a sense of how accurately I'm spatially tracking things. I do like it though!

Grandson portrait

This one was interesting to draw! As always, displaying my Photoshop Takes Zero Skill heavily filtered pic, but I do want to post some WIPs too!

I wanted to try something different for this - I really like the angle and lighting of this shot, but it was too daunting to approach with pencil because it was extremely black heavy, and I don't like having to spend so much pencil lead on paper because it's so tedious, not to mention the graphite goes everywhere and is prone to smudging! So I decided to start my digital canvas black, and worked my way towards white. It kind of worked???

I know, red's kind of default for drawing on black. I did consider doing a hot pink sketch, but decided against it.

Okay so I guess it's still black on white, I didn't actually succeed at the whole white on black project XD

Ugh hair. Tight curls uuuugh. I do still enjoy hair though. It's clothes I hate! I had a hard time trying to figure out how his jacket was made, and then I realised it's a denim jacket with a hoodie, so I had to go back and edit the right side (his left) and then redo the left side (his right) entirely!

I also fudged a lot of the heavy blacks because my phone accentuates the contrast; my monitor is actually a few shades lighter, but I can't be bothered calibrating my monitor because then I can't see anything with the glare in the daytime...

And the rest is history.

I think it's the best digital drawing I've done yet, but that's also because I took out any challenges I had with colour. I still got the face (and so many other things) wrong but hey I like it! Hooray for more progress!

I think I'm done trying to draw digitally for the rest of this year. It's so hard! Also a cropped version without a filter wrecking it just cause.

When will I get better at colour accuracy??? When I can I capture expressions accurately???

Also I still hate doing digital only from scratch, it's too hard!
